We schrijven 1961
als de Bintangs worden opgericht door Frank Kraaijeveld. Vanaf het
begin deden de Bintangs het anders dan alle andere bands. Rhythm and
Blues wordt er gespeeld maar dan op een ruige, stevige manier die
zeker voor die tijd revolutionair was. Er ontstond al vlug een grote
en fanatieke aanhang die zich al net zo ruig gedroeg als de muziek
die werd gespeeld. Later voegt zanger Gus Pleines zich bij de band
die met zijn ‘Jaggeriaans’ stemgeluid een nieuwe dimensie toevoegt.
De
Bintangs scoren top 10 hits met onder andere “Travelin’in the USA”,
“Ridin’on the L&N” en “Hound is on the Run”.
De reputatie als
ultieme live-band groeit gestaag en zo wordt als voorprogramma van
The Rolling Stones opgetreden en van The Kinks. Die laatsten worden
overigens volkomen weggespeeld door De Bintangs. De grotere
festivals als Rock Werchter en later ook Parkpop en Arrow Rock
worden succesvol aangedaan. Rock Werchter zelfs meerdere malen. Ook
veel optredens in België en Duitsland.
De geschiedenis van
de band is er een van pieken en dalen. Bezettingswisselingen en
onderling gekrakeel maken het er niet makkelijker op. In een
stabiele periode dient zich een nieuw hoogtepunt aan. In 1975
verschijnt het album Genuine Bull. Opgenomen in de vermaarde
Rockfield Studio’s in Wales onder produktie van Steve Verocca. Tot
op de dag van vandaag wordt dit album gezien als absoluut hoogtepunt
van de Nederpop. Een periode van veel optreden volgt tot in de jaren
'80. In 1985 volgt het afscheidsoptreden in een uitverkocht
Paradiso.
Sinds 2007 speelt
de band in de volgende samenstelling: Frank Kraaijeveld (bas, zang),
ex Bad to the Bone lid Maarten Ibelings (gitaar), ex Tröckener Keck
Gerben Ibelings (drums) en Dagomar Jansen (gitaar, slide-gitaar,
mondorgel en zang). Op 15 mei 2009 ziet de nieuwe CD “Fire and Iron”
het levenslicht. De titel is een nauwkeurige samenvatting van de
inhoud: dampende, stevige en gruizige rock, wars van alle trends en
rechtstreeks vanuit de onderbuik. De schrijvende pers is unaniem in
hun recensies: de Bintangs is de beste rockband van Nederland!
Live blijven de
Bintangs een unicum: rauw, strak, vol overgave en high energy!

In
1961 the Bintangs are founded by Frank Kraaijeveld. From the start
the Bintangs differ from others. They play Rhythm and Blues but raw
and heavy which was revolutionary for those days. Rapidly the
gathered followers which are just as rough as the music the Bintangs
played. Later singer Gus Pleines joins the band and adds a new
dimension with his ‘Jaggerish’ voice. The Bintangs have top 10 hits
with “Travelin’in the USA”, “Ridin’on the L&N” and “Hound is on the
Run”.
Their reputation as great live-band is growing and they are invited
to kick off the show of The Rolling Stones and The Kinks. The Kinks
are played off the stage completely by the Bintangs. The Bintangs
played at the big festivals like Rock Werchter, Parkpop and Arrow
Rock. Rock Werchter even several times.
The
history of the band has ups and downs. Changes in their line-up and
quarrels between band members making things worse. In a stable
period a new pinnacle is reached. In 1975 they bring out the album
Genuine Bull. Recorded in the legendary Rockfield Studio’s in Wales,
produced by Steve Verocca. Untill now the albums is still seen as
one of the highlights of the Dutch music. In the eighties the
Bintangs have many performances. In 1985 the Bintangs have their
farewell show in a sold-out Paradiso.
Since 2007 the band’s line-up is: Frank Kraaijeveld (bass, vocals),
ex Bad to the Bone member Maarten Ibelings (guitar), ex Tröckener
Keck Gerben Ibelings (drums) and Dagomar Jansen (guitar,
slide-guitar, mouth organ and vocals). May 15th 2009 the
new CD “Fire and Iron” is brought out. The title is a good summary
of what’s on it: steaming, rough and raw rock music right from the
heart. The media are unanimous: the Bintangs are the best rock band
of the Netherlands!
Live the Bintangs are still unique: raw, firm, passionate and high
energy!
